RESPONSE

“If we succeed in discovering another civilization, what should we say to them about humanity and our planet?”

The poignant question posed to civilization by the late Stephen Hawking, set the conceptual direction for the UK Pavilion at EXPO 2020. Echoing the sentiment, an inspired collaboration with award-winning designer, Es Devlin saw the interactive pavilion spring to life. Constructed with cross-laminated timber and instilled with A.I technology, the pavilion was reflective of UK’s vision of the future – sustainable, engaging and innovative.

The “message to space” activation attracted visitors from all corners of the EXPO. Each of whom contributed to the narrative by submitting a word shaped into a poem with A.I and displayed across the circular facade. The poem travelled to the deepest realms of space, serving as a representation of our civilization.

Impact

The award-winning UK pavilion at EXPO 2020 was also honoured as “The world’s first interactive pavilion”. An estimated 25 million visitors contributed to the illuminated sculptural “message to space”. By seamlessly integrating AR and AI technology into the pavilion design, the UK not only showcased its commitment to innovation but also initiated a global conversation about the collective identity of humanity.
